Eco-friendly Initiatives at Kuranda Villas
ENERGY
Energy efficient lighting is used throughout the villas. Posters are displayed in the kitchens and bathrooms asking guests to help save water by:-
❖ Spending less than 4 minutes in the shower.
❖ Turning off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
❖ Hanging towels and washing out on the clothesline when
the weather is fine, instead of using the clothes dryer.
❖ Turning off lights and electrical appliances and ceiling fans when not in the villas to save water used in power generation.
WATER USE
Water conservation and reduction methods employed include front loading washing machines, dual flush toilets, high pressure low flow shower heads.
RECYCLING
Composting of all green waste - Guests can dispose of their green waste into a compost bin situated between the two villas.
Recycling facilities provided for guests include an aluminium can crusher located on the wall outside the back doors of each villa for guests to use and then we recycle the collected cans.
Kuranda is part of the Tablelands Regional Council and they tell us that they separate all the rubbish once it's collected for recycling.
Bulk buying and minimal packaging of products includes the use of one litre bottles of shower/bath gel in each villa for guests to use. Also liquid soap is used for hand washing and the dispenser refilled as required.
CHEMICAL USE
Use of environmentally friendly cleaning products, typically Earth Choice products, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar.
BUILDING
Insulation - Both villas have had roof insulation installed, which has noticeably lowered the interior temperature of the villas. Kuranda is 330 metres above sea level and much less humid than Cairns so the need for air-conditioning systems are not required. Ceiling fans are located throughout the villas.
TREE PLANTING
Since June 2009 we have arranged to have a rainforest tree planted by one of Kuranda's local environmental groups for every confirmed booking we have received. This is our way of giving something back to the environment and reducing our carbon footprint. Up to 30th September 2010, we have had 110 trees planted.
REALFOOD NETWORK
Guests are given the opportunity to order locally grown organic/biodynamic fruit and vegetables via the RealFood Network, thereby supporting local producers on the Atherton Tablelands.
